Dispute a hospital bill line by line

Ask an AI assistant to read an itemized hospital bill, flag duplicate or non-billable charges, and draft a written dispute.

What happened

In a widely shared 2025 post, Matt Rosenberg said he used Claude and ChatGPT to help his sister-in-law challenge a $195,000 bill after his brother-in-law died; he reported getting it reduced to roughly $33,000 to $37,000 depending on the report. He said he checked the AI's findings himself. A 2026 New York Times report described another patient whose partner used Claude to challenge a $22,604 ER collections notice and called it a useful adviser, "but not a perfect one."

Our verdict

One of the highest-value uses for an AI assistant. Treat its findings as leads to verify, not facts.

Prompt to copy

I have an itemized hospital bill (pasted below, with personal identifiers removed). Act as a medical billing reviewer. 1) List any charges that look duplicated, unbundled, or billed for inpatient services if I was not admitted. 2) Flag any supply or service with an unusually high markup and say what a typical Medicare rate would be, if you know it, and how I can confirm it. 3) List the questions I should ask the hospital billing office. 4) Draft a polite, firm written dispute letter requesting an itemized review. Mark anything you are unsure of so I can verify it.
Before you try it: Remove names, dates of birth, and account numbers before pasting. General chatbots are not covered by HIPAA. Verify any billing rule the AI cites before relying on it.
